    The city of Beirut was devastated by a massive explosion on Tuesday August 4 and tens of thousands of people as well as hundreds of establishments were severely affected. Many USJ campuses around the area and its University hospital were heavily affected and suffered substantial damages. Photos and a summary report of the cost of repairing the damage caused by the explosion are enclosed on the below document. USJ needs support, an Emergency Relief Fund USJ-HDF HOSPITAL has been launched, please see more information at :

    IAU expresses it’s support to the University of Makerere which saw it’s main building hit by the fire on 20 September. We wish the University a speedy reconstruction so that they can continue to build the future.

    Al-Hawash Private University (HPU) is on the verge of opening its University hospital which will provide Wadi Al Nasara region with the population of over 300 000 with cutting-edge clinical services, medical research and comprehensive training programs for students and staff.

  • Zhejiang University - Last call for participation to the 6th China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition

    Zhejiang University (ZJU) in collaboration with Ministry of Education of China launches a call for participation to the 6th China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. The finale and award ceremony are scheduled to be held in Guangzhou in November 2020.
    The China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition has been successfully held five times since 2015, and has become the world’s largest innovation and entrepreneurship competition for college students. In 2019, the competition drew 4.57 million participants (1.09 million teams) from 4,093 colleges and universities in 124 countries and regions. Over 1,000 professionals were invited to judge the competition and mentor the participants, among whom were investors, entrepreneurs, startup incubator mentors, and innovation and entrepreneurship education experts from China and abroad.     The webinar will take place from 3:00pm to 4:15pm on 18 September 2020 which is the anniversary of the first signing of the Magna Charta Universitatum and will discuss the lessons we are learning from Covid-19.

    The topic will be addressed from an international system perspective by Eva Egron-Polak, member of MCO Governing Council and former Secretary General of the IAU, and from the perspective of the Rector of a leading University Francesco Ubertini, Rector of University of Bologna and President of the Magna Charta Observatory.

  • University of Bergen introduces new initiatives for Ocean and SDG Research and Teaching

    The University of Bergen, Norway, announced two major initiatives related to the institution’s commitment to the SDGs. The first being the official launch of the One Ocean expedition on 20 August 2020, in which the need to educate future leaders in sustainable ocean management. This SDG 14 research and teaching expedition also goes beyond ocean science and is in line with the new initiative launched at the University of Bergen to strengthen critical thinking and interdisciplinary work on all SDGs.
