➨ Higher Education One Year into the COVID-19 Pandemic

In February 2021, one year into the pandemic, the IAU launched the second edition of The Global Survey on The Impact of COVID-19 on Higher Education to monitor the situation. This webinar officially launches the report, presenting an overview and focusing on the main results of the survey. The information uses responses from higher education institutions (HEIs) and other stakeholders one year into the pandemic and offers a detailed picture of the COVID-19 impact on higher education.

You will learn results from the global and regional perspectives, from both public and private HEIs with replies coming from 496 HEIs in 112 countries and territories. Institutional responses cover all higher education mission and functioning aspects, namely, governance, teaching and learning, research, and community/societal engagement.

The survey results generate concern about the future for some institutions but also highlight several positive outcomes, where the crisis has brought about new opportunities and possibilities.

➨ IAU - UNEP-YEA! Connecting Higher Education and the Green Economy Community:
Workforce Development for the Clean Energy Transition and Climate Solutions

Geared towards the higher education community and focused on the need for a green economy, this event provides an overview about how to update all academic areas to help create an inclusive and skilled workforce to address the climate crisis and provide careers that support sustainable development. The event will describe strategies and resources to help educators and employers improve curricula, placement processes and assist career advisers.The event makes use of the newly launched Global Guidance for Education on Green Jobs, a document that provides insights and empowerment for effective actions, a collection of key resources, and an opportunity to join an international community of practice.

The primary audiences for this event are higher education rectors and top administrators, career advisors for students and alumni and teaching staff in all academic areas, as well as businesses, NGOs, and governments in support of the green economy and sustainable transformation. Attendees will find this event useful for strategic planning and collaborative efforts with each other. Participants will enhance their understanding of how higher education, both universities and technical institutions, can better connect with employers for curricular updates, internships and placements.

This event is part of a larger initiative designed to connect a stronger supply of necessary green and environmental sustainability skills through education with a growing demand for green jobs in the workforce. The initiative is housed at UNEP and includes input from multiple expert organizations, including IAU as a host of this kick-off event. Higher education and other attendees will learn how to more effectively interact with employers to provide the workforce they need. This will be an interactive session.

➨ The Global Role of University Associations

The world is more connected today yet also more complex than ever. Higher education is tasked with making sense of this complexity and called upon to propose solutions to the challenges we face.

For this, universities must come together with a shared sense of purpose to learn, challenge, and collaborate as they advance on their collective demands and, at times, competing interests and agendas.

University associations serve to channel, communicate, and represent such collective interests and agendas while also articulating and supporting the challenges faced by the higher education sector to fulfil their mandate. Moreover, associations liaise with the many stakeholders in society, create opportunities for their constituents and advocate higher education’s inherent values. The local and global role of university associations is thus one of carefully considering the course of higher education, bringing about coherence and synergies, monitoring its outputs, and intelligently amplifying its significance to enhance and unleash HE’s potential to bring about positive change in the world.

Leaders of different university associations will discuss the role of higher education associations in the current context and what future roles these associations will play. They will reflect on the local and global role of university associations, how they collaborate and complement each other (or at times compete) and how they influence higher education and society.

This session forms part of a series reflecting on The Future of Higher education, and the outcomes are to inform the UNESCO World Higher Education Conference (May 2022).

➨ Language-Based Equity in African Health Research

Of the 1.33 billion people in Africa, only 6.5 million are native English speakers. However, English has been referred to as the dominant global language of scientific communication and publication, which raises efficacy and equity concerns.

The Wellcome-commissioned research study sought to determine whether the status of English as the dominant language of science is contributing to wider structural inequalities within health science research. The full study report and policy brief are available in English, and translated versions in French, Portuguese, Arabic and Swahili are available here.

During the webinar, speakers from the research team, led by Dr Aaron Yarmoshuk, Independent Consultant and Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Toronto, presented the key findings and recommendations from the language equity study. External global experts also took part in the conversation.

➨ IAU-UNODC Higher Education Engages with SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

Following a call for young scholars to carry out research linked to SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions by the IAU and UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime), this webinar and roundtable is the occasion to launch the publication of their outcomes and to discuss how research contributes to addressing SDG 16.

The 13 authors of the 12 winning papers were announced during this joint IAU-UNODC webinar on 23 November. The event was an occasion to meet the writers and launch the publication ‘Higher Education engages with SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions’.

A roundtable and Q&A followed where authors and participants discussed the themes addressed in their papers.

➨ HEALTH AND WELL-BEING IN HIGHER EDUCATION – THE IMPACT OF THE PANDEMIC

University autonomy is not only a fundamental value that universities sign on to, but it is also a key requirement that needs to be put into practice to ensure a well-functioning governance. Autonomy allows universities to reply in a timely manner to challenges and opportunities and to be more flexible and effective in taking and implementing decisions. It also allows them to plan long term and to be less dependent on political changes. ➨ TRANSFORMATIVE INNOVATION AND COLLABORATION FOR SDG 12: RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION AT UNIVERSITIES | 13 July 2021

Higher Education institutions are uniquely placed to drive new forms of responsible consumption and production needed to achieve pressing SDG 12 targets as well as other SDGs. Autonomous universities act as independent communities capable of combining diverse forms of knowledge with local expertise and global HE partners to reshape themselves and the communities they serve. This integration promotes campus self-sufficiency, resource abundance, and a culture of service while advancing resilient student and community livelihoods in the face of growing risk and uncertainty. Panellists explore institutional and policy changes (such as sustainable procurement), new materials and transformative technologies, efficient and effective resource use, and efforts to create greater circulation. Collaboration so far through the global SDG 12 university cluster will also be explored.

This webinar with the IAU HESD Cluster on SDG 12 is an additional side event to the United Nations High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) 2021, which took place 6-15 July 2021. SDG 12: Ensure Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns is one of the Goals under review this year.

➨ THE CHANGING MISSION OF UNIVERSITIES OVER TIME | 25 May 2021

The idea of a university is one that has been passed on over centuries, and has remained remarkably stable over time. Indeed, the university - in its corporate structure and mission - has been a success model. It is one of the very few institutions in global history having survived the passing of time despite profound political, economic, and cultural transformations - not least during the seventy years of IAU’s existence. In the past and present, universities have shown to be drivers, mediators, and critical observers of change. In doing so, we ask how the universities have come to be contemporarily resilient and adaptable.

Moreover, the mission of universities today is, simply put, to research, teach, and serve society. But this is an evolution that has taken place in stages. This webinar wishes to discuss the changing mission of universities over time, and dares to ask how the university’s past might inform its future.

➨ OPEN SCIENCE IN A CLOSED WORLD? | 18 May 2021

This year, UNESCO is preparing a Recommendation on Open Science, a normative instrument that represents a global commitment towards Open Science. In this context, the "In Focus" section of the magazine IAU Horizons explores the current state of Open Science from the perspective of the universities framed by the question: Democratising knowledge: Open Science in a Closed World?

Open Science is not new, but rather an inherent principle of science, but what makes a great difference in the current context is the development of digital technologies that provides new opportunities and tools in terms of how we generate, store, share and disseminate research data and findings. Yet, rethinking the entire ecosystem of science is a complex process. In this session co-organised by IAU and and the Boston College Center for International Higher Education (CIHE), we bring together four authors who have contributed to the newly released edition of IAU Horizons to discuss the subject and to launch the magazine.

➨ STRATEGIC AND PURPOSEFUL INTERNATIONALIZATION / INTERNACIONALIZACIÓN ESTRATÉGICA CON PROPÓSITO | 11 May 2021 / 11 mayo 2021

Internationalization is an intentional process, not a passive experience. It is not a goal in itself, but a means to enhance quality of higher education in all its aspects, learning & teaching, research and societal engagement. HEIs experience different pressures; they exist in different contexts and have different needs. Therefore, there is no “one size fits all” model or approach for internationalization, rather, each university must develop its own way of internationalizing. Intentional and purposeful internationalization requires a strategic approach which reflects the overall mission and strategy of each institution. At the same time, all HEIs can benefit from the best thinking and good practice from other institutions around the world.

In this webinar distinguished speakers from universities with different characteristics (private and public, small, and large) and from different countries in Latin America and Spain present good practices in strategic and purposeful internationalization. This session showcases examples of how HEIs institutionalize internationalization policies, in line with their institutional objectives, allowing participants to understand the success factors, strengths, and weaknesses of these processes, especially in changing contexts such as the current one due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The webinar also presents the results of the impact evaluation study analysing the effectiveness of the Internationalization Strategy Advisory Services (ISAS) developed by the International Association of Universities, a set of services that encouraged universities to develop or revise their internationalization strategy.

With a view to accelerating action for UN Agenda 2030, the IAU Global Cluster on HESD fosters university engagement with the SDGs, while also developing new partnerships and generating new knowledge and new cooperation dynamics. With the upcoming UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development (17-19 May 2021), now is the time to transform learning s well as our societies to be more sustainable. ➨ HIGHER EDUCATION’S RESPONSE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC: BUILDING A MORE SUSTAINABLE AND DEMOCRATIC FUTURE | 21 April 2021

As higher education across the world begins to think of life after COVID, we need to rethink what the purpose and philosophy of our universities are, or should be, because a return to the status quo ante is neither possible nor desirable. ’Business as usual’ will not be adequate to deal with the weaknesses shown up in our systems, nor will it really be able to rise to the challenges posed by a post-COVID world.

On the positive side, the response by universities to the pandemic has demonstrated the deep well of creativity, engagement, and solidarity that exists within them. We need to capture that emerging spirit and create the conditions for a new, more democratic, inclusive and networked university to emerge. Just like the pandemic, that project will necessarily be an international one; it will also need to involve all university stakeholders, not only managers but also all staff and, of course, the students.
