It was an emotionally moving ceremony of celebration as university students from Soweto and elsewhere, and academics, thanked Sir Hilary for his lifelong work in the advancement of global justice and the bending of scholarship in the service of democracy. Professor Beckles was welcomed home to Africa as a son who continues to fight bravely for his people on both sides of the Atlantic.

Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, the university orator noted, “has emerged an iconic leader of the global reparations movement, a distinguished Vice-Chancellor in the arena of strategic planning for higher education, a United Nations official for sustainable development advocacy and a world-renowned historian with honorary awards from many other universities. The combination of academic excellence, effective advocacy, and insightful administration illustrates Sir Hilary’s intellectual versatility, passion and commitment for justice, and visionary leadership.”

  • Magna Charta Observatory (MCO) - Registration open - MCO Webinar - May 4th, 2023

Students Leading University Community Engagement: what more can be done and how should it be recognised?

You are invited to participate in a Magna Charta Observatory (MCO) Webinar on 4 May at 1500 CEST. At the event an essay competition will be launched with prizes that include travel to a potentially career enhancing influential international conference in the autumn of 2023.

The Magna Charta Universitatum 2020 speaks about the responsibility of universities to engage with their communities and recognises the role of students as key stakeholders in universities.

To help to give more substance to this in practice the MCO is working with the Global Student Forum (GSF) and the European Students’ Union (ESU) to deliver a webinar and organise an essay competition to identify ways in which students might play a greater part in enabling their universities to fulfil their responsibilities to society. A key question is how might students’ role in this be recognised in a way that adds value to their university experience and communicates their achievements.

The webinar will include student and university perspectives and examples of successful practice from around the globe.

The essay competition will be global. It is designed to enable successful practice to be showcased and the winners to join an international conference in October 2023 where they will present their essays in the presence of university leaders from around the globe and receive awards.

The webinar will be moderated by Martina Darmanin, member of the MCO’s Governing Council and former president of ESU.

The Center for International Higher Education (CIHE) at Boston College invites you to join the next CIHE webinar:
    Alternative models of higher education
Over the past half century, there has been remarkable convergence across the world around one primary model of higher education, both due to the continuing legacy of colonial structures and to contemporary pressures arising in the context of globalization. However, this story of convergence is only partial, as alternatives to this model have always existed and are also being created, in response to perceived deficiencies with the conventional model. This webinar explores some of these alternatives, posing questions as to where higher education can and should go in the decades to come.
Featuring Udi Mandel and Kelly Teamey (Ecoversities Alliance) and Nhlanhla Thwala (African Leadership Academy)

  • Mykolas Romeris University shares the Statement of Lithuanian University Rector’s conference, expressing strong support for Ukrainian higher education sector

The Lithuanian University Conference strongly condemns the military actions of the Russian Federation against the independent state of Ukraine. Lithuanian universities show solidarity with Ukrainian universities, their staff, lecturers, students and the entire Ukrainian nation.

We are ready to use all available resources at this difficult time to help Ukrainian universities. We will also help Ukrainians who come to seek asylum in Lithuania, giving them the opportunity to continue their studies or research, to settle in Lithuania for a shorter or longer period of time.

These events demonstrate once again the importance of building an educated, democratic, critical society. Our common responsibility is to develop a young generation that loves and protects its country together.

Universities are one of the most important institutions in helping the state build a strong fabric of society. The solidarity and common tradition of universities in such hours unite all those who believe in European values, democracy, freedom of speech and thought.
