IAU and the
Internationalization of Higher Education
Recent years have seen a tremendous expansion of ways in which higher
education goes ‘international”. As well, international trends and
developments taking place beyond national boundaries impact more easily
on higher education policy at institutional and national levels, thus
creating additional inter-connections between various changes.
Consequently it is not only difficult to keep track of the various
concepts and terms used to describe new processes in the international
aspects of higher education, it is also difficult to capture these
interconnections. An additional challenge comes from the fact
that innovations and changes are on-going and thus the field is
evolving constantly.
In order to permit easy navigation through these web pages, IAU offers
an introductory page of definitions, which enables us to
structure our web pages and simultaneously can serve to guide users of
to resources and information on terms such as Internationalisation,
Cross-border education (or borderless/transnational education),
Internationalisation at Home, as well as information on issues related
to this whole area, such as the GATS, more easily.
Internationalisation of higher education is a natural and constant
focus for IAU, keeping with its Constitution and mandate, both of which
clearly call for IAU to promote and facilitate greater international
co-operation among the universities of the world.
In the field of Internationalization, IAU:
- elaborates Policy
Statements that call for changes and improvements;
- carries out regular Surveys
and publishes reports to identify, monitor and
track new developments and emerging challenges;
- organises regular Conferences
and Meetings to
discuss and improve the knowledge on this important topic;
- speaks out to promote/advocate
internationalisation at various fora.
Our aim is to turn these pages into a dynamic forum. Any contributions
to this work would be much appreciated.
