Background

THE UNIQUE CONVENING POWER OF IAU
The International Association of Universities has the unique convening power to bring together heads of universities, other higher education institutions and their national and regional associations to discuss topics and themes of interest around the world.  By virtue of its global membership, IAU can almost guarantee that any of its meetings will enable participants to meet their peers from all other world regions.  IAU makes every effort to ensure that each of its General Conferences, Meetings, Workshops, Seminars or Symposia reflects the wide diversity and geographic spread of our membership.

Gathering its members regularly and frequently has become a major objective for IAU and this, despite the great opportunities offered by ICTs to communicate without face-to-face meetings.  The location, nature and scope of these different events are quite varied – some are open to all interested higher education leaders or representatives, others are by invitation only.  Always, they are held in collaboration with an IAU member or a partner organization.  The themes addressed are often quite narrowly defined while other conferences are of a more general nature. The increasing number of events that IAU organizes or in which it acts as a sponsor or partner, reflects IAU’s conviction that offering its members plenty of opportunities to meet and to become actively involved in our work will promote international cooperation and networking which in turn will benefit the higher education sector. The most recent events in each category of IAU meetings (general conference, annual international conference, symposia, workshops etc) are described here in chronological order, indicating as well what is being planned for the future.

General Conference: supreme decision-making organ of the Association.  It meets once every four years and it is on this occasion that all IAU Members in Good Standing elect the IAU President as well as the Administrative Board members.

For past General Conferences, please see list. For next General Conference see Upcoming IAU Events.

Other International Conferences, Meetings and Seminars
Between General Conferences, the IAU holds international Conferences for Members and beyond to discuss matters of general concern to international higher education.

For past conferences and meetings see list, for future international conferences see Upcoming IAU Events.
